Identification Quiz #4

"Answer"
This bird is clearly a myiarchus flycatcher, as indicated in the original quiz description. Since we can't see the front of the bird, it's reasonable to assume that we can identify the bird solely from the back, presumably from the rectrices. On first blush, the reddish on the rectrices appears to extend all the way to the tail. However, the outermost rectrice on the left side of the tail shows, in fact, that the brown curves prominently around the bottom of the tail, despite the wear at the tip which might suggest that the red extends all the way to the tip. Not even NUTTING'S FLYCATCHER shows this much curvature of the brown at the base of the tail; all other myiarchus flycatchers have little to no curvature. This ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was photographed in the fall of 1999 north of the Skyline Grove at Fort Funston.
