January 1999 Field Journal 1.3 [CALBIRD] Panoche Valley 20th CBC - Highlights
Panoche Valley recorded its highest species total ever today with 92
species. Highlights follow.Any and all birders visiting Panoche Valley are reminded to respect private
property at all times. Several areas of interest are in threat of becoming
completely off-limits due to repeated tresspassing by birders. Please bird
ONLY FROM THE ROAD. Of special concern is Silver Creek Ranch along Panoche
Road, and ANY area where a fence must be crossed to gain access (e.g.,
McCullough Ranch).Birds of interest include GOLDEN EAGLES, BALD EAGLE, (1 imm. and 1 adult),
MERLIN (several in the valley), PRAIRIE FALCON (several, in the valley),
FERRUGINOUS HAWK (including one dark-morph along Little Panoche Rd.),
CHUCKAR (11 at Shotgun Pass), MOUNTAIN PLOVER (17 on Little Panoche Road and 1 on
Panoche Rd.), LONG-BILLED CURLEW, GREATER ROADRUNNER (only one, on BLM
Road), BURROWING OWL (near the behives on Little Panoche Rd.), LEWIS WOODPECKER
(milepost 19.0 on Panoche Rd), NORTHERN SHRIKE (first discovered by Al
Jaramillo, on BLM road, 5.0-5.1 miles past the fork, along the left fork),
MARSH WREN, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET (consistent with several other counts in
central Calif), MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD (30 on BLM' 30 laong Panoche Rd.), SAGE
THRASHER (5 along BLM Road, several near the Nor. Shrike), CASSIN'S KINGBIRD
(2 or 3, near the intersection of New Idria and Panoche Rds.), VESPER
SPARROWS (Little Panoche Rd, Panoche Rd, BLM Road), SAGE SPARROWS (of the sub-species
canescens;BLM Rd.), and 2 or 3 LARK BUNTING (Panoche Rd, just past Silver
Creek Ranch).Many thanks to all who participated.

I made a few stops on my bike today while trying to get rid of my Big Year
gut and only found a few things of note including at least 82 KILLDEER in
the Bison Pen and 2 CANVASBACKS at Spreckles Lake.
- NORTHERN SHRIKE (not seen). An adult LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE with a mask that was closer to NSHR than to LOSH provided much amusement.
- SAGE THRASHER, one at 5.0 miles from the junction of Little Panoche
Road and BLM land and at least one other at the Air Traffic Control station at the end of the left fork.- MOUNTAIN PLOVER, at least 10 in the field with the cattle just south of Shotgun Pass
- LONG-BILLED CURLEW, 15-18 flying overhead and another 50 or so in the field immediately south of Shotgun Pass
- FERRUGINOUS HAWK, at least 2 east on Panoche Road east of the junction with New Idria Road
- VESPER SPARROW, at least three in a field north of Panoche Road, just east of the junction with New Idria Road and another along New Idria Road just south of the junction with Panoche Road.
- LARK BUNTING, one and probably two roughly one mile up New Idria Road underneath a gate at an abrupt right-hand turn
- REDHEAD, at least two at Paicines Reservoir
- TEAL sp., in the pond near the summit along Panoche Road
- MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD, one along Panoche Road east of New Idria Road and about 15-20 along the BLM road.
