May 2002 Field Journal 5.1 [EBB] Olive-sided Flycatchers
The earliest date I find for the East Bay for an Olive-sided Flycatcher is
3/20/1980 at Oakland, ALA (Joe Morlan) though a mid-April arrival date seems
more typical. Most of the records in my notebooks come from birds at locations where they
were clearly migrants which brings up an interesting point. In general, it
seems that most of our early arriving neotropical migrants are individuals
that will remain to breed here, while the birds detected later will continue
on to northern breeding grounds. Olive-sideds are a good example. Birds
appear on territory in the Berkeley Hills in mid-late April but most of the
records from drier areas where they clearly do not breed such as Mt. Diablo
or Bethel Island are from May or even early June. This helps to explain why
migrant traps that have relatively few breeding species (the end of Winton
Ave. at Hayward Reg. Shoreline for example) don't see many migrants until
deep into April. At Piper Slough I have never recorded a Wilson's Warbler
until early April with most records from May yet on a trip to Pinehurst Rd.
near Moraga on 3/31/1996 I had 7 singing males, most likely on territory, in
a stretch of a little over a mile. I hope this doesn't bore all of you, I
find it pretty neat. To take the point a step further, I have had Wilson's
Warbler at Bethel Island as late as June 2nd, a bird clearly still heading
north to breed, while we have had adults feeding young in Contra Costa County
by Mid-May!!!Finally, if you have gotten this far, you might be interested to know that it
doesn't appear that Olive-sided Flycatcher bred in the East Bay until about
1920. Those at the time felt that the spread of planted groves at that time
that made it possible. It was exactly the same story for Dark-eyed Junco and
American Robin. Apparently both of those species were first confirmed
locally in 1917. You would tend to assume birds as common as juncos and
robins would have always nested here, wouldn't you?5.8 [SFBirds]
Here are the results of the Breeding Bird Roundup on 4 May. Once again, thanks to everyone that helped out; we gathered quite a bit of information! Not every possible or better breeding record was recorded; the status of common breeders like House Finch, House Sparrow or even Brown-headed Cowbird is beyond the scope of such a one-day effort. However, I think we managed to do a pretty good job of covering most of the mainland as well as Treasure and Yerba Buena Islands, so I think we have a good baseline. There is a date associated with each sighting, as there are some sightings which were not from the 4th of May. Needs to be watched Yellow Warbler extirpated from the city as a breeder Common Yellowthroat only one singing male though there were easily 5-6 at the wooden bridge earlier this year at dawn Spotted Towhee two singing males at Racoon Hollow need to be monitored Savannah Sparrow not observed! Need to monitor Heron's Head birds carefully. White-crowned Sparrow no sightings from GGP! We might have a problem here... Black-headed Grosbeak little evidence of breeding Lazuli Bunting almost surely breeds on Bayview Hill; need to confirm Tricolored Blackbird a single male in Buffalo Paddock; interesting to see if it persists Western Meadowlark not observed! Great-tailed Grackle yeah right Bullock's Oriole what's going on with the Glen Canyon pair? Red Crossbill no breeding evidence.5.12 [EBB] Mother's Day on Mt. Diablo
This morning, Bob Brandriff and I had a single singing BLACK-CHINNED SPARROW above the last pullout before the south entrance gate to Mt. Diablo. From the just below the pullout, the bird was singing on a bush right at the horizon on the hill above. No less interesting was a pair of RUFOUS-CROWNED SPARROWS just below the road in nearly the same spot, with one carrying food. The nest must be quite close to the road; Bob and I were convinced they were waiting for us to leave before reentering the nest. Please use discretion in this area. To complete the trio of interesting sparrows, Bob found a SAGE SPARROW also in the same general area.Other sightings of local interest:

We had quite a successful trip. At the Placer Big Trees Grove near dusk, Kevin
used his audio expertise (and volume :-) to find a calling SPOTTED OWL. They stopped calling as we got near, however. We continued birding in the failing light and were returning to the car when the the Spotted Owl started to call again along with another Spotted Owl giving the alarm call. We moved upslope a bit and the owls kept coming towards us. Eventually, one was directly over me, not more than 20 feet away, while its mate was 40-50 feet away. After sumptuous looks, we moved away as the birds clearly were on territory and were agitated. The pair "escorted" us away, following us to the edge of their territory! The drive down to the flam spot netted at least three NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS calling at various locations, including one right along the road that we couldn't get a look at. Just below this, there was a COMMON POORWILL flycatching along the edge of the road. Near Little Oak Flat, there were two calling FLAMMULATED OWLS, though they were not close enough to get looks at.
At Little Oak Flat, there was another Northern Saw-whet Owl calling which Kevin eventually found in the tree for us. As well, there were two more Flammulated Owls, including one which surely was in an isolated tree directly in front of us that no one could locate despite training several lanterns on the tree for extended periods. We enjoyed a nightcap and drifted off to sleep with both the Saw-whet and the Flam still calling.
Birding the next morning was a bit anticlimatic, but we did have nice views of a calling MOUNTAIN QUAIL and the dawn chorus was quite remarkable at Little Oak Flat.
