December 2004 Field Journal 12.4 SF Birding
On the 4th, I birded Chain of Lakes. North Lake was birdy but only a WESTERN TANAGER was unexpected. Three RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHes in the cypresses northwest of North Lake were also heard. It seems to be a good winter for them; I also have two others in the pines behind my house.Other sightings of local interest:
Pied-billed Grebe (1)
Red-shouldered Hawk (3)
Killdeer (2)
Belted Kingfisher (1)
Northern Flicker (2)
Say's Phoebe (2)
Steller's Jay (1, 3)
Red-breasted Nuthatch (1)
Western Tanager (1)Locations:
1) North Lake (Dec 04)
2) Buffalo Paddock (Dec 04)
3) Middle Lake (Dec 04)12.8 SF Birding, Herring Run in northern SM county
This morning I headed out to eastern SF and just south. The herring run has moved south of the city and is currently just offshore south of the exit for the 'stick. There was a huge raft of GREATER SCAUP there that I did not check thoroughly with the low angle sun and crazed 49er fans screaming by a 75mph in SUVs uncomfortably close behind me. It's also illegal to stop there, for obvious reasons. There easily could be something good in there that I didn't see. Back in SF, I had a drake EURASIAN WIGEON at the east end of Aurelius Walker (née Fitch). At the Caspian Tern colony were two RING-BILLED GULLS. At Aquatic Park, there was a female NUTTALL'S WOODPECKER and the community garden in Fort Mason had a SAY'S PHOEBE.Home
