October 2006 Field Journal 10.1 PRBO Big Day in San Francisco
First of all, thanks to all who contributed to a worthy cause. For those who pledged on a per-species basis, Mark will contact you as soon as we have results from the Farallons and other SF county locales. Below is a brief report on our day birding SF.Alan Hopkins, Matt Zlatunich, Mark Eaton and I birded SF from approximately 5:45 a.m. until 7 p.m. yesterday, racking up a total of 127 species during that time. Weather was ideal for birding, with light winds, high overcast, and comfortable temps, with birds active in most locations throughout the day. While we dipped on all the continuing rarities, we had a nice assortment of Western migrants, raptors, and shorebirds, and generally managed to see most of the expected species with a few surprises. Highlights included:
- Green-winged Teal on Crissy Lagoon
- Northern Harrier and Peregrine Falcon over Presidio Hills
- a late Pigeon Guillemot in the channel near the bridge
- both Virginia Rail and Sora at the Wooden Bridge, and a second Sora at the Concrete Bridge
- 2 Green Herons and a flyaway phalarope (presumably Red-Necked) at the Concrete Bridge
- Nuttall's and Hairy Woodpeckers at El Polin Spring
- Yellow-billed Magpie at India Basin
- Blue-gray gnatcatcher in the willows along John Muir Drive
- Hermit Warbler at MH2
- Spotted Towhee and Bewick's Wren at Presidio Hills
- 2 Black-headed Grosbeaks - 1 at El Polin, 1 at Middle LakeThe complete list is below.
